Rock the Vote

Rock the Vote

This year's presidential election has been quite heated, to say the least. During the 2008 election, I was a political science major at UCLA (Go Bruins!), and the spirit on campus was so contagious and invigorating. Now, 8 years later, there is so much hype surrounding this upcoming election, and I see such passionate words flying around all over the internet and social media. Unfortunately, this election has us so unbelievably divided, and it is more important than ever to get out and VOTE! Here's why:

It's not just the Prez on the ballot.

Propositions people! YOUR VOTE will have a direct impact on legislation that will then have a direct impact on you, your family, and your future. Propositions are passed or not passed by a simple majority vote. Here in California, there are many V important topics up for grabs. Should marijuana be legalized? Who gets that 10 cents you pay at the grocery store for a plastic bag? What about gun control? Tobacco taxes? Should porn stars be required to wear condoms?!  If you live in CA, Ballotfyi is a great nonpartisan resource to find out what is on the state's ballot this year. They presented the arguments for each side in a simple and fun way, and I really enjoyed reading it!

You can still affect the winner's margin.

Many people in deep blue or deep red states believe that their vote "doesn't count." Buuuuut, your vote can determine if the winner wins by a landslide or just squeaks by. So what? If the new Mr. or Mrs. President just barely wins, then their political agenda may have to be adjusted to compromise and keep the peace with the other voters. Or, you may want your candidate to win by a landslide to further propel their plans for the White House.

We fought for our right to vote.

Currently trending on Twitter: #Repealthe19th. Ummmm....WHAT?? No. This is even more of a reason why we need to exercise our right to vote, regardless of what side you are on. Throughout history, minority groups have fought to be treated as equals and earn the same civil liberties as everyone else. I am woman, hear me roar.

If you have not yet registered to vote, it may not be too late! Here is a list of all the registration deadlines by state. And most importantly, don't forget to #RocktheVote on November 8th! Not November 28, Mr. Trump. Hillary...Donald...May the odds be ever in your favor.
