Our Engagement Story
Hey guys! So if you follow me on social media, you may or may not know that Jacob and I recently got engaged!! Woot woot! We are coming up to two months of being engaged after dating for a year and a half and we couldn't be happier! Everyone keeps asking us when the wedding is, and right now, we don't know! We may even do a destination wedding, so between everyone's schedules and travel weather, we are still trying to figure it all out! So while I don't have any wedding details to share with you, I CAN share our engagement story and how I kinda sorta almost ruined the proposal.
Alright, so let's just start with the first time I almost ruined the surprise. A couple of weeks before Jacob proposed, he met up with my parents to ask for their blessing to marry me. What a sweet boy. But while he was at my parents house, for some strange reason, I decided to FaceTime him! I don't know why I had the sudden urge to FaceTime him because we NEVER FaceTime. I can count on one hand the number of times we have ever video chatted. We never call each other either, so the fact that I randomly felt like FaceTiming him was seriously WEIRD. Intuition? Maybe. But I like to think that I have crazy psychic abilities. Tyler the Hollywood Medium- call me.
Anyways, poor Jacob was obviously super paranoid that I FaceTimed him while he was talking to my parents. He thought maybe I knew what was going on, but he obviously had to ignore my call and lie about why he didn't pick up. He later told me that he didn't like that he felt he "had to be shady with someone he didn't want to be shady with," which I thought was SO sweet! Seriously. I have a keeper.
So two weeks after that happened, we went to Catalina Island for Valentine's Day....at least that is what he told me. Everyone asks me if I knew going in to the trip if I knew it was going to happen, and I would be lying if I said it wasn't in the back of my mind. But I tried not to think about it or get my hopes up. I just wanted to enjoy our weekend there for Valentine's.
By the time we got the island, I was pretty seasick from the hour long boat ride there. But I pushed through it enough for us to check in to our hotel and grab some lunch at the Bluewater Grill. The food there was great, and the restaurant was right on the water for some amazing views! They have some great outdoor seating, but it was a tad chilly for us, so we opted to sit inside right by the window. Highly recommend.
After getting some food in my stomach, I was feeling a lot better, so we walked around the main downtown area to look at the shops, enjoy the views on the beach, and stroll down the pier. I thought that if he was going to propose, it would have been sometime during this time, but it didn't happen and I was trying not to think about it.
As we were walking along the pier, we saw a bunch of different advertisements for various water activities. Obviously I was nervous to do anything since I had just recovered from the boat ride to the island, but Jacob wanted to do the submarine ride and promised I wouldn't get seasick since we would be underwater. Well....he was wrong. The submarine ride was super cool and I liked seeing all the fish, but I got a little nauseous from the swaying back and forth.
By the time the ride was over, I was EXHAUSTED from all of the activities and sea sickness, so we went back to the hotel to relax before dinner. Now this is where things get interesting...
Jacob planned on proposing at the hotel. He packed the scrapbook I made with him for our 1 year anniversary and planned on asking me after looking through all of our memories together. I was sitting on the bed when he brought out the scrapbook and kneeled next to me with it. He opened the front cover of the book when I decided that I was too tired and nauseous from the day and FELL ASLEEP! Poor Jacob was LITERALLY down on one knee with the ring in his pocket and your girl decided to take a fucking nap. #sleepygirlproblems
I remember waking up for a second to see him looking through the scrapbook by himself, which looking back is the saddest thing ever. Like a sad puppy wanting attention from his owner. I fell back asleep and later woke up to him watching ESPN. Just waiting for Sleeping Beauty to wake the F up. I fell back asleep and eventually had to wake up and get ready because we had dinner reservations.
We went to dinner at the Avalon Grille, so by the time we got back to the hotel after dinner I definitely had it out of my head that he was going to propose. If he hadn't done it by then, then he wasn't going to.
Eventually Jacob tried a second time and brought out the scrapbook. When we got to the last page he talked about all the memories we have made so far together and how he looks forward to making more memories. I still had no freaking clue what was happening and I kept interrupting what he was trying to say. When he pulled out the ring box I was beyond shocked, especially because I was looking super fantastic in my sweatpants, messy bun and no makeup. I mean, if a guy is going to propose to you when you're looking like that, then he must really love you, right?
We spent the next couple of hours talking until it was way past our 10pm bedtime. The next day we called our families and went down to the water to take some photos. Obviously we had to have the perfect photo to make it Instagram and Facebook official. But, of course, since we had zip lining planned for the day, I didn't have any cute clothes! I only packed my Justin Bieber concert t-shirt. Oh well.
We spent the rest of the day zip lining which was AMAZING! So much fun and we got to see some great views of the island. Then we grabbed our stuff from the hotel and hung out on the dock waiting for our boat to arrive, and guess what? I didn't get sea sick this time.
If you have made it this far, thanks for reading our engagement story. I know it wasn't one of those crazy ones that go viral on Facebook, but I thought it was a funny story. And even though I kinda ruined it and it probably wasn't exactly what Jacob had in mind when he planned it, it was perfect and we wouldn't want it any other way.
